The hint-ignoring trap is real. I did the same thing on a DP problem — recognized it too late. The floor mentality at Google is brutal.
Optimal beats working is such a Google-specific thing. At every other company I have interviewed at, working with a clear explanation was fine. Reapply in 6 months.
